So we have officially begun the 31 days of comedy project. For my first show, I scheduled a show at the Underground Lounge in Wrigleyville. As soon as I got there, the adventure began. Turns out the Underground was closed for New Years Day. However, shows had still been booked. I quickly panicked and thought, “oh great, I don’t get to start today.” THANK GOD for improvisation and thinking on your feet because the guy who runs the shows at the Underground (Avery) decided to call another place down the street and ask if we could go there. They said sure and we traveled a few blocks to Mullens. This 31 days really started off with a bang as I thought it was not going to happen according to plan. Once we got to Mullens, the show began. We went first. I’m not going to try to explain an improv scene because frankly it doesn’t translate. It really is one of those “you had to be there” kind of things. I can tell you we got the suggestion of ‘lavender’ and the scene was between an ex-couple who worked in a Boutique. We established the characters, relationship and location. We did one scene for the entire time. I thought it went extremely well. It started off bumpy (first 30 seconds) because we were trying to find our footing, but once we were on the same page everything ran smoothly. I got to share this experience with one of my best friends Dave and am happy he decided to do it with me. Working with people you trust is HUGE. Day 1 down. 30 more to go.
